Orthotic Devices Escape Competitive Bidding in
2007 & 2008
AOPA is pleased to announce that no orthoses have been included in the
first round of competitive bidding, based on the final regulations
released by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) on
April 2, 2007.
The earliest orthotic devices could come under this program would be in 2009 when the number of Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) increases from 10 to 80 and the list of devices subject to bidding might be modified. (See the March 30 AOPA In Advance Special Edition for the list of 10 MSAs.)
It is important to note, however, that O&P is still subject to the new quality standards and accreditation requirements previously mandated by the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003. CMS has not yet announced when compliance with the new standards and accreditation will become mandatory.
AOPA will be publishing additional information and assistance on these requirements in the future.
