The Division of Orthotics and Prosthetics is a fully equipped component of the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMC). The division of O&P provides comprehensive services to all ages of clients, in all stages of life. We are one of the O&P providers assisting individuals who need prosthetic services who have been impacted and displaced by the devastation from Hurricane Katrina. We are servicing both Mississippi and Louisiana.

We are investigating the possibility of setting up a temporary or mobile lab in the southern part of the state. We have been unable to contact our colleagues on the coast to offer them assistance. We do not want to interrupt the ongoing care they are providing. We are using the media to let individuals who need prosthetic and orthotic services know how to contact us. As the number of individuals we service from the storm increases, we may call on our fellow practitioners and suppliers for assistance.

The University of Mississippi Hospitals and Clinics are the teaching centers for numerous education programs and feature a 722-bed diagnostic and treatment referral center for the entire state. Inpatients total about 27,000 annually with more than 418,000 outpatient and emergency visits every year. UMC is designated as a level one trauma center.

We deeply appreciate your prayers and support. If you become aware of any other way we can be of service during this time of recovery and restoration do not hesitate to contact our office.

Some of the homes of our department staff suffered mild damage and power loss. It has taken us about a week to regroup and return to a normal schedule. We are now able to offer services to those in need.

Bringing the Contributor Together with the Company or Person in Need
Our goal is to serve as collection point for "offers of support" and "requests for help." Note:

  • Contributors and aid recipients are responsible for contacting each other and working through the details of each exchange.
  • Communications in affected areas remain spotty. Please provide as much information as you can for the best chance of a successful exchange.
  • AOPA, AAOP and ABC assume no responsibility for the arrangements made between contributors and recipients of help.
